Where Legacy Shapes the Future

A story of land, leadership, and the enduring power of conservation.

For generations, the Powys family has cared for this land — from its early days as a pioneering ranch to its transformation into a living conservancy. Today, that legacy continues as Suyian evolves into a new model for conservation, where wildlife, livestock, and communities coexist in balance and purpose.

our story

Where Legacy Becomes Landscape

How a century of stewardship gave rise to a new model for conservation.

Suyian is rooted in a century-long relationship between people, livestock, wildlife, and land.

What began as a family-run sheep ranch in Laikipia evolved into a cattle ranch, and ultimately, a bold conservation vision — one that still honours the land’s pastoral heritage while restoring its wild heart.

For generations, the Powys family cared for this land — a landscape where elephants once disappeared and slowly returned under careful stewardship.
As the pressures on Laikipia’s ecosystems grew, so did the resolve to protect this place forever.

The Start of the Conservation Era

The Birth of Suyian Conservancy

How a family’s gift and a global partnership secured Suyian’s future.

After the passing of long-time land steward Gilfrid Powys in 2017, his daughters Anne and Marian stepped forward to continue his legacy — this time with a new mission: conservation.

In 2022, through the generosity of the Powys family and a transformative gift from American philanthropist Louis Bacon, Space for Giants supported the transition of ownership from Suyian Ranch to the Suyian Conservancy Trust, a Kenyan not-for-profit organisation.

This move ensures that Suyian — with its precious wildlife and vital landscapes — is protected in perpetuity, for the benefit of Kenyans and indeed, the world.

That same year, the land formally entered a new chapter under a permanent conservation trust, marking the birth of Suyian Conservancy — a protected landscape designed to safeguard biodiversity, restore rangelands, and strengthen local livelihoods.

Luxury Meets Legacy

The Future of Travel is Regenerative

A new model where every journey protects what matters most.

In 2025, a new chapter begins with the opening of andBeyond Suyian Lodge — where world-class eco-tourism and high-impact conservation come together.

Every guest stay contributes directly to ranger operations, ecosystem restoration, and education programs that shape the next generation of conservation leaders.

At Suyian, tourism isn’t separate from conservation — it’s central to its success.
This is the future of conservation tourism: a model where travel sustains wildlife protection, powers community development, and reinvests every visit back into the land itself.

Through our partnership with andBeyond, every stay becomes part of a regenerative cycle — one that funds conservation, supports livelihoods, and invites guests to experience the wild in a way that gives back more than it takes.

Luxury Meets Legacy

Our vision is to create a replicable model of coexistence—where wildlife, livestock, and people thrive together on shared land. Suyian is proving that conservation can be inclusive, regenerative, and self-sustaining—protecting what matters while creating a legacy that lasts.

Our ambition is bold:

Establish East Africa’s largest black rhino sanctuary by 2028 as a flagship for species recovery and rewilding.

Restore and protect 44,000 acres of critical rangelands through regenerative grazing and habitat renewal.

Serve as a regional hub for conservation training and rangeland management, empowering future land stewards.

Pioneer carbon and biodiversity credit programs that value ecosystems and sustain conservation finance.
